Ingredients

  • 250 g mixed berries (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries)
  • 150 g granulated sugar
  • 300 ml whole milk
  • 150 ml heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish optional
  • Extra berry compote for serving optional

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Ice cream maker (optional, for creamier texture)
  • Large saucepan
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • Heat-resistant spatula
  • Loaf pan or storage container

Method

  1. In a saucepan, combine the mixed berries and sugar over medium heat. Cook while gently stirring for about 10 minutes until the berries break down and release their juices. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, lemon zest, orange zest, and lemon juice.
  3. Pour the cooled berry mixture into the milk mixture and stir well to combine.
  4. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency, typically about 20-25 minutes.
  6. Transfer the gelato to a storage container and freeze for an additional 4 hours or until firm.
  7. Scoop and serve in neat pieces, garnished with fresh mint and a drizzle of berry compote if desired.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with different types of berries or add a hint of nutmeg for additional warmth.
If you're looking for a lighter option, consider substituting half of the heavy cream with coconut milk for a creamy yet dairy-free version.
This gelato stores well in an airtight container in the freezer for up to two weeks.
Just be sure to let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before scooping to make serving a breeze!
Enjoy your homemade treat!
