Ingredients

  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 200 g granulated sugar
  • 100 g unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or 1 tbsp vanilla extract)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 150 g semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 25 g sea salt (for garnish) optional
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting) optional

Equipment

  • Baking pan (9x9 inch)
  • Heatproof mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer (or whisk)
  • Cooking spatula
  • Chef's knife
  • Parchment paper (for easier removal)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easier removal.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla bean paste until fully incorporated.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips, ensuring even distribution throughout the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few moist crumbs. The bars should be lightly golden on top and slightly firm to the touch.
  8. Allow the dessert bars to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before cutting them into squares for serving.
